Family Squabble Leaves Michael Clark Duncan’s Grave Unmarked

Michael Clarke Duncan Memorial Service PhotoIt’s been nearly a year since actor Michael Clark Duncan passed away and yet he still isn’t resting in peace. His tomb remains unmarked due to a beef between Duncan’s fiancee Omarosa and his family.
According to reports, the fight is over a bronze plaque that’s set to be placed on Michael Clark Duncan’s tomb. At this point in time, the plaque has yet to b ordered despite it already being paid for. The price of the plaque was already included in Duncan’s funeral costs. The reason for the plaque not having been ordered depends on who you ask.
According to Omarosa, she planned to order the plaque with her fiancee’s name, date of birth and death. However, she never ordered it because she was blocked by Duncan’s family who claimed they wanted to handle the plaque arrangements. If you talk to members of Michael Clark Duncan’s family, they will tell you the total opposite. The family claims Omarosa misrepresented herself as the late actor’s wife on cemetery paperwork and promised to order the plaque, but has yet to do so.
both sides are being stubborn and are refusing to talk to each other to work out the issue. A family friend calls the situation shameful considering Michael Clark Duncan’s mother in 95 years old and in poor health. All Duncan’s mother wants to see is her son finally resting peacefully. They can’t get it together for the greater good of Michael Clark Duncan and his mother?

“Takers” Producer On What We Could Learn From Paul Walker

Will Packer and Paul Walker

“Oh you mean White Chocolate? (laughs)  Let me tell you, the sistas loved them some Paul! ” -Will Packer

Hollywood lost one of its bright and shining stars November 30, 2013 when actor Paul Walker, 40was killed in a car crash along with friend and business partner, Roger Rodas.  While Walker was known for his striking surfer-boy looks, his laid back charm and open heart earned him millions of fans worldwide.  Even with stardom from the multi-billion dollar “Fast and Furious” franchise, Walker was equally passionate about the world he lived in, as witnessed by his charity work with the Reach Out Worldwideorganization, where he volunteered in relief work in Haiti and Chile.
One of Walker’s most memorable roles was in 2010′s summer hit “Takers” as John Rahway, a sharp-dressed, no-nonsense bank thief.  His onscreen chemistry with partner in crime Idris Elba, helped to make “Takers”  the #1 movie in America when it opened August 27th.
The Urban Daily spoke with “Takers” producer Will Packerwho shared fond memories of the recently departed actor and what Hollywood, and the world at large, could learn from the actor/humanitarian.
TUD: How did you first meet Paul?
Will Packer: I met him during pre-production of “Takers” – we had always wanted him for the project, he was our first choice.  What I remember most about meeting him is that he was so grounded.  Working in Hollywood, you come across all types of personalities and ego, that they seem to have an air of entitlement about them. But Paul was the absolute opposite. From the beginning to the end of shooting the movie, when Paul was around, he always felt like your homeboy.  He really was one of the true genuine spirits in Hollywood.
How much input did Paul have in developing his character?
Paul-Walker-Takers
All my films are very collaborative and Paul was very influential in the way that (his character) John walked and the way that he dressed.  What you see on screen, all that swag,  is what Paul brought to the role. I mean the character was written well on the page, but he wanted to make it clear that he and Idris’ character were the leaders of the crew.  Paul’s character wasn’t the most outspoken, but he was very calculating, always thinking ahead.
Quite a few box office analysts said that “Takers” wouldn’t do well opening weekend and predicted that “The Last Exorcism” would be the #1 movie. How did it feel seeing “Takers” winning that weekend box office?
I loved it. People really underestimated that film.  They were not expecting much from it, but I knew there was an audience out there who wanted to see it.
Was there ever any desire to make a sequel?
Takers-crew
The way the story was constructed, it really lent itself to having one.  There was even the thought of a prequel, where we could get all the original cast together but it never came to fruition.
What would you like people to know about Paul both as an actor and a person?
He was not “Hollywood.”  When you think about the negative stereotypes, for someone who was part of one of the biggest franchises in the world, he was not driven by material things.  He loved his daughter, that was very evident to anyone who met him. And he treated everyone -whether it was a production assistant or an intern – the same.  That was really refreshing to be around.
What’s been so amazing is the outpouring of love and support from the African-American community with the news of Paul’s death. What do you think accounted for his crossover appeal with Black fans?
Oh you mean White Chocolate? (laughs)  Let me tell you, the sistas loved them some Paul!  That’s one of the things I would hear over and over again.  There was a star, not an actress but a celebrity in a different industry, who didn’t care about anyone else I worked with except Paul.  She demanded that I introduce her to him at one of our “Takers” premieres.  She was genuinely nervous and antsy about meeting him -he had that effect on women.  Obviously his physical traits are what people will remember about him.  But it was his interior that really made Paul who he was.  I was really blessed to work with him and as I see the outpouring of affection for him, I think about how fortunate I was to know him.
What I really admired about Paul was his willingness to be part of projects with casts of color.  What can Hollywood learn from him in terms of diversity?
Takers-Cast
Paul was Paul and he didn’t judge you based on your background or your ethnicity.  Paul was a human being and treated everyone with respect no matter where you came from.  We all, and not just Hollywood, could learn from him.   In the shadow of Nelson Mandela’s passing, who was all about equality and love for humanity, I feel that Paul really embodied those ideals.  He practiced those beliefs every day.

Judge Revokes Chris Brown’s Probation

Chris Brown At A basketball GameJust as Chris Brown is getting his life on track through rehab and anger management, he hits a snag on his road to recovery. Brown’s probation was revoked in the Rihanna assault case due to a fight he was involved in in Washington D.C.
Breezy was in the Los Angeles court room for a progress report hearing. Due to the fact assault charges were filed against Brown in D.C., the judge felt the filing of the charges proved Chris Brown hadn’t been obeying all of the laws, which was a condition of his probation. Breezy wasn’t remanded into custody because the judge was impressed with the strides he’s been making in rehab. A hearing is set for February and that’s when the judge will decide if Chris Brown should be sentenced to prison or not.
For the time being, Brown was ordered not to use any medical marijuana. According to his progress reports, Breezy has been taken off of the medical marijuana and has been given new psychotropic medicine which has helped him “regulate his emotions” a lot better than in the past. Brown also participates in weekly boot camp and recently completed a 12-hour ropes course that was meant to strengthen team-building skills and trust.

Why You Shouldn’t Mess With Stray Cats

Cat Attacks CoupleI have a confession. As a grown man, I am petrified of animals. Yes, I was attacked by a few animals when I was growing up which resulted in this crazy fear. When most people find out that I’m scared of animals, the response usually goes something like this, “I know as big as you are that you ain’t scared of no little cat or dog!” Well, I am and I am not ashamed.
I happened to be getting made fun of about my fear when my boss quietly sent me a video to check out. The video, posted on CBS Detroit’s website,  shows a woman trying to get a stray cat to leave her property so that her dog isn’t attacked by the stray animal. Well, the dog seemed quite fine without bothering the cat. Too bad the owner didn’t take notice of that tidbit of information because she tried to get rid of the cat by kicking snow on it. The cat didn’t take too kindly to the snow assault and reacted accordingly.

2013: The Best And Worst In Black Movies

Black Movies 2013
2013 will go down in history as the year Black cinema turned a corner.  While mainstream outlets like the NY Times  declared 2013  the “breakout year in Black film” and BuzzFeed cynically observed that “we’ve been here before” (we haven’t), ultimately moviegoers had the final say at the box office.  First time directors like Sheldon Candis (“LUV”) and Ryan Coogler (“Fruitvale Station”) gave distinct voices to the young Black male narrative.  Terence Nance broke out of the box with a fantastical journey of love in the animated “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty.”
2013 also proved to be a success for Black film both critically and financially.  Steve McQueen’s ”12 Years A Slave” is proving to be a forerunner in next year’s award circuit, already garnering seven Golden Globe nominations and four SAG award noms.  ”Lee Daniels’ The Butler” generated over $116 million in U.S. ticket sales and an even more impressive $45 million overseas — a rare feat considering most Black films directed by Black directors rarely do well at the foreign box office.  Mainstream (read: White) film critics and analysts dismissively  low-balled “Best Man Holiday” with a soft $19 million opening, were left with egg on their faces when it came in at #2 spot with a $30 million, right on the heels of “Thor:  The Dark World.”
Black independent film is still holding strong as AFFRM (African American Film Releasing Movement) released its sixth feature, “Big Words.”  AFFRM’s founder, Ava DuVernay, who made history as the first African-American woman to win Best Director at Sundance, marked another milestone as the first Black woman to direct a network primetime series created by a Black woman (Shonda Rhimes), starring a Black actress (Kerry Washington).

Tara Defends Using Plan B Pill With Peter Gunz

Tara Love And Hip Hop Red CarpetLast week, Black Twitter went into overdrive as they watched “Love and Hip Hop” and Tara admitted to still sleeping with her ex Peter Gunz despite knowing he was married to his side chick/artist Amina. During Tara’s confession, she said, “In the last two months, I’ve probably had to use two Plan Bs.” Black Twitter went in on Tara and now she’s coming out to defend herself.
In an interview with Coco Fab, Tara defended using the Plan B pills:
“First of all, women have fought for the right to choose their own methods of birth control and women take birth control every day. Just because I want to be on the safe side and use Plan B doesn’t make me a bad person. That’s why it’s there, actually. Even in having protected sex things happen. I can’t allow a mishap to happen while having protected sex with Peter. I still have to protect myself.”
While Tara is right, there is something wrong with her statement. Nobody was angry at her for using the Plan B pills. People were mad at Tara for talking about using the Plan B pills like she was proud to have had to use them. Women have every right to use whatever form of birth control they so chose. However, if you plan on broadcasting your business all over reality television like that, you have to be prepared for the judgements that are sure to follow.

Shocking But True: Award Organiser Reveals Dirty Secrets Some Actors/Actresses do To Win Awards

We are Nigerians and there is nothing that can not be possible in this country, it was revealed how upcoming actresses pay before they feature in a movie, now it is how Nollywood actresses pay to get awards.

According to one of the organizers of the Nollywood awards has exposed the dirty secrets of many ladies in the Nollywood movie industry.

Hear what one of them said recently, "It depends on how you hold yourself. I remember in the third edition when the nominees list came out, one actress sent somebody to call me and offer me money in order for her to win.

I told the person that the money they offered me wouldn’t change my life in any way. It is just the money I could spend in less than 24 hours. If I collect money from anybody, before the next award, the person would easily tell a nominee to just go and pay a certain amount to me if she or he wanted to win. We have a long way to go.

Award ceremony is very sensitive. Once you get it wrong the first time, you are doomed. There is no second chance. Because of that, I cannot collect money from anybody. But then again, I noticed that once the nominee’s list comes out, some people start giving us jobs for our other businesses."

Revealed: Why Ice Prince Denied His Son, Jamal Before Now

Ice Prince welcomed a baby boy last year with a 20-year old undergraduate student. Soon after she put to bed and the news went out, Ice Prince denied ever impregnating her, and said it to whoever cared to listen. He has however explained his reasons for doing that in this new interview with showbizplus, because he now flaunts the boy and also brought him on stage at his just concluded FOZ concert.

You initially denied having a baby?

It was complicated back then, I didn’t really know what was happening and I wasn’t sure of certain things. So the best I had to do then was denying it and sort out things first. Now I know he is my child and I have done everything as a father ever since.

What is the relationship like with his mother?

I speak with her often and it is usually about the baby. That is all for now.

Have you started thinking about marriage?

No, I’m fully focused on my music.

Ice Prince welcomed Toluwalase Jamal Zamani last year with a 20-year-old lady, Bimbo who was rumoured to be former label mate, Jesse Jagz' ex-girlfriend

Love is unpredictable though; if my man comes along the way, then it is all well and good."I don't know why guys are ignoring this babe. Please, Lagos guys try and consider Karen nau. Lol!

Police Rescue 16 Pregnant Teenagers From Illegal Orphanage Run By a Fake Doctor in Imo State

The Imo State Police Command yesterday rescued 16 pregnant girls aged between 14 to 19 years from an illegal orphanage that operated in the guise of an NGO.

The 'orphanage' was operated by a fake medical doctor, James Ezuma.
Ezuma is currently standing trial for alleged gun running. The NGO named the Ezuma Women and Children Rights Protection Initiative (EWCRPI) was a platform that shields Ezuma's criminal activities from security operatives.
Briefing newsmen, the State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Musa Katsina, disclosed that the NGO was a baby factory where girls were "encouraged to get pregnant and paid N100,000 on delivery" to give away their babies, who then have been used for purposes "ranging from child trafficking to rituals", Katsina said.
He added that the Command is trying to unravel the whereabouts of a baby that was snatched away from its teenage mother, Nnachi Chinaza, by the suspect who refused to disclose to the Police who the baby was
sold to.
"So far he has taken us to Abia state where he said the baby is but we were unable to recover the baby, though investigations are still ongoing, the presumption at the moment is that the baby may have been used for ritual purposes", Katsina said.
He warned parents to watch their teenage girls to protect them from child traffickers and baby factory operators.
Katsina further said that Ezuma was arraigned before an Owerri Chief Magistrate Court in November 2013 for the offence of conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.
However, when the police conducted a search on the premises of the purported NGO, "sixteen pregnant girls between the ages of fourteen and nineteen were found; also recovered was an automatic eight loader pump action gun which is a prohibited firearm".
The 19-year-old mother of the missing child from Ebonyi State told journalists she was directed to come to the home by a lady who promised she will be taken care of.
She said that her baby was taken away without her consent. "When I started disturbing him to give me my baby, he gave me one hundred thousand Naira instead".
The names of the rescued expectant mothers were given as Peace Effiong (24, Rivers state), Rita Nnanna (25, Anambra), Blessing Ubbah (20, Lagos), Joy Brown (19, Imo), Precious Anyadike (18, Lagos), Kelechi Wenwu (17, Imo), Chidinma Okoro (19, Enugu), Iheekanma Onwubiko (21, Imo), Chinyere Ibenime (20, Imo), Nkiru Alozie (16, Abia), Nnachi Chinaza (19, Ebonyi), Victoria Peter Udoh (16, Akwa Ibom), Ngozi Ike (20, Rivers), Chika Eze (18, Abia), Jecila Nwonke (19, Abia) and Chinaza Samsom (14, Abia).
Also recovered in the vast remises were ten exotic cars such as a green Jaguar Car with registration number PD787 IKJ, a red Lincon Navigator with registration number, DN 494 ABC, ash Jaguar Car with registration number BT 929 GWA, white Chrysler with reg. no RBC 335 AS, Red Chrysler with reg. no BH 168 GWA, white Chrysler with reg. no JZ 608 ABC, black Lincon Car with reg. no EU 917 LND, ash Honda Jeep with reg. no EZ 388 ABJ and two other unregistered cars, ash Nissan Quest and Nissan Partfinder Jeep.

To recall, on November 25, Imo State Government promised to revoke certificates of all foster homes in its attempt to solve the probles of baby factories in the state. 'Production' of babies has become a 'blooming' business in Nigeria. There are, however, no statistics on the number of babies sold, nor the young men and women entangled.

Did Chris Okotie really say all Catholics will go to hell because they worship satan?

According to a report by PM News, he did! Hard to believe but read their report below...

From PM News Nigeria
All Catholics in the world will go to hell because they worship Satan and are led by an Anti-Christ Pope who is a friend to the devil, Nigeria’s controversial preacher Chris Okotie, told his congregation on Sunday, leaving members bewildered.Okotie, while preaching in his Household of God Church in Lagos, said the Catholic church is “a counterfeit church set up by Satan” and that Catholics “bow to idols and crucify Jesus every Sunday when they eat bread claiming they are eating Jesus’ body.”“They are not Christians and have never been. They don’t know Jesus. They believe that when they eat bread on Sundays, they are eating the body of Jesus. It’s ritual,” Okotie told a stunned congregation. If he really said this then it's a damn shame. Is this pastor really a man of God? He can't make his marriages work and now he's condemning a religious denomination? See the rest of what he allegedly said yesterday after the cut...

He said Pope Francis is an Anti-Christ who does the job of the devil and that time is fast approaching when the Catholic church will pledge allegiance to Satan.
“The pope is an Anti-Christ and the Catholic church will soon declare for Satan. This is the end of times,” Okotie erupted. He advised members of his church to come to the rescue of Catholics and evangelise them.
This, he said, was not out of disrespect but out of respect for the word of God.
He said those who know the truth should bring it to those who do not know it in the Catholic Church.
Okotie said one of the Catholic most revered Popes, Pope John Paul 11, surrendered the Catholic Church to Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus Christ, instead of Jesus himself. He said even the current Pope Francis has also done same.

He said Catholics are not Christians and do not worship the same Christ that he preaches in his church, at least the one spoken about in the Bible.
Okotie said he did not write the Bible but it was clear to him that those in the Catholic church were lost and were heading to hell fire.
“They don’t believe in heaven. They believe in purgatory, the purgatory that they invented,” Okotie said.“That church, the Catholic church has been there for Satan and at the right time, they will declare for Satan,”Okotie said.Okotie who has been married twice and divorced also twice said a beauty pageant will take place in his church next Sunday to select the most beautiful woman in his church.
He also said his yearly “Grace programme” where he makes donations to charity organisations will also take place next Sunday.

The once rock star turned celebrity preacher and politician has been controversial for years.
He once said it was the devil who told him for the first time that he was going to be a preacher.
He also said Nigeria’s famous preacher Prophet T.B. Joshua is the son of the devil and his followers will go straight to hell.
In recent years, he has been saying that God has anointed him to be Nigeria’s president. That prophecy has not come to pass in two presidential elections that he participated in.

I Used To Like Women With Big Hips, But One Morning... Don Jazzy

Tastes of Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy, regarding what kind of women he likes seem to have changed.
In his earlier interview, given to Punch journalists, he said,
“With due respect to slim ladies, there is no way any lady shaped like a broom can attract my full attention. I’m sorry but that’s the truth. My ideal woman must be God-fearing. She must have all the basic curves in the right places. The rounder and bigger her chest and backside, the better.” Now Don Jazzy claims to prefer slim ladies more.
In a very recent interview with Yes! Magazine, he said,
“See, I’m very very dangerous in the sense that my mind can change sometimes. For
instance, a lot of people used to think that I like people with big hips and big nyansh – big–figured people.
"But I woke up one morning and everything changed. I’m a totally different person now and I like my women straight up from the runway – Lepa to bad (Smiles).
Some of my friends say I’m having midlife crisis, but that’s what I like now."

Woman Posing to be a Well-Wisher Disappears With Week-Old Baby

A health worker in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State is on the run after allegedly stealing a one-week old baby from her mother while posing to be a well-wisher.

The suspect (name withheld) was reported to have disappeared with the baby whom she offered to carry while the mother’s stitches were being removed at the clinic. The mother had been delivered of the baby through Caesarian section a week before.

A family member said the suspect had visited the house with new clothes for the baby and later offered to accompany the mother who was on her way to the clinic to remove her stitches.
The unsuspecting mother agreed to go with her and left her child with the fleeing suspect as she went in to be attended to at the clinic. However, the suspect had disappeared with the baby by the time she was through.

She reportedly asked those around of the whereabouts of the woman but no one had any useful information. She eventually raised alarm and people joined in the search for the suspect but she was nowhere to be found.

The theft of the baby has thrown the family and the area into despair with many describing the incident as strange in the area.

Interim Administrator of Bokkos Local Government, Mrs. Hanatu Dantong has, meanwhile, visited the family to sympathise with them, promising to work with security men for the recovery of the missing baby.

According to her, “this thing affects the whole of us. There is no way we will sit down in office and say we don’t have anything to do with the case. This thing is not good for our image, that is why we came immediately the matter got to us to sympathize with the family.”

She called for prayers towards the recovery of the baby and advised parents to be wary of people who come around posing as friends as they might have evil intentions.

Father of the stolen baby, Mr. Mahana Zachariah, said it was shocking that someone would be so heartless to steal a week old baby, adding: “I hear this type of stories and read about them but now it has happened in my house.”

DEVASTATED: SEE What Wole Soyinka Has To Say About Nelson Mandela's Death

The death of former South African President, Nelson Mandela, seems to have left Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, world acclaimed wordsmith, short of words.

He appears to be so shell-shocked and devastated.
In a rare and short tribute to former South African president and anti-apartheid hero, Nelson Mandela, Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka had this to say "
"The soul of Africa has departed, and there is nothing miraculous left in the world."
Mr. Mandela passed away Thursday night at 95, throwing the entire world into unprecedented mourning.
Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour following the death of the man who is credited for reconciling White and Black South African after the brutal apartheid era that saw the black majority suffering hideous human rights abuses under successive white minority regimes.
Mandela was born in 1918. He was sentenced to life in imprisonment by the apartheid government for his
armed struggle against a government infamous for killing unarmed protesters. He spent 27 years in prison before was released and elected first black South African president in 1993.

Kanye West: ?I Am The Next Nelson Mandela?

Kanye West is again under attack, and today - for claiming that he will soon be a bigger cultural and civil rights icon than Nelson Mandela.
In an interview with WGCI radio in Chicago, the American rapper said that yesterday’s death of the 95-year-old South African leader will finally allow people to focus more of their attention on West’s own accomplishments.

When Kanye was asked who, in his opinion, could possibly replace Nelson Mandela in terms of leadership, he responded,

“I am the next Nelson Mandela. I’m only 36 years old, and when I look at everything I’ve accomplished, it’s the only comparison that makes any sense. By the time I’m 95, I’m going to be a bigger hero than he ever was."

West claims he liberates minds with his music. To his mind, that’s more important than liberating "a few people from apartheid or whatever".
West continues that even though he has huge respect for Mandela, anyone can be replaced. The rapper says that he is already worshiped in the whole world and expects, noting,
"And there’s more to come."

Watch the Throne
Nelson Mandela, renowned South African icon of freedom and liberation, died yesterday at the age of 95, leaving the whole world mourning over his passing.

Meanwhile Kanye West is famous for attracting people's attention to his personality. His reaction today was so unusual, however, that host Adrian Cronauer decided to challenge his assertions.

“What have you actually done for civil rights?” he attacked the self-confident celebrity. “Have you been involved in any campaigns? Any political activities? It seems to me comparing yourself to Mandela is a bit of a stretch.”

West answered,

“I faced mad racism when I entered this profession. I mean how many black rappers can you name that came before me? I was a pioneer. And now I’m doing the same thing in the fashion world.

“Not to mention I have a bigger market than he ever did. Mandela was working in South Africa, which has, like what, six people? I started my magic here in the USA and then I took my business global. Worldwide baby."

Empress Njamah Denies She Ever Said She Can't Marry A Poor Man!

Nollywood actress, businesswoman Empress Njamah has denied saying she can never marry a poor man as quoted in an interview with Showbizplus.
Here's what Empress said in a new chat with Encomium:

What is your word to your colleagues, friends, family and fans who felicitated with you as you added a year?
I really appreciate all of them, especially my fans who usually send me messages.  I love my fans because they know what I can do or say at anytime.  Like what happened recently where I was quoted as saying I will never marry a poor man.

So, you didn’t say that?
I never said that.  If you know Empress Njamah, you would tell the world, she is never a proud person.  I will never say I cannot marry a poor man.  I will never say a thing like that.  I thank those who didn’t take the
story line, hook and sinker.  It almost broke me down if not for my friends.
I cannot say that because you don’t know what God has in stock for anybody.  There are girls who married poor men who later became rich.  Some had nothing and married a woman who eventually brought good luck to them. I didn’t say that.

What did you then say?
I said when you go to a supermarket, buy what you can afford.  That is the truth.

Are you in a relationship?
I’m not in a relationship.

Why?
Relationship requires a lot.  Some relationships are distractions.  Because of what I do, I need to give the kids a lot of time. It is my work, the kids and my business for now.  When I have groomed people to do some of the things I do for me, then I would have time for a relationship. And that should be pretty soon?

Will and Jada Smith headed for divorce?

According to a report by National Enquirer, friends of the A-list couple fear they won't make it through the holidays. Well, it's according to National Enquirer, so there's probably no cause for alarm.

From The National Enquirer
He’s been caught with a hot young blonde, she’s been seen without her wedding ring – and now friends fear this will be Will and Jada’s last Christmas together! “Will and Jada are trying to put on a good front in public, but behind the scenes, they’re having major troubles,” said a source close to the couple, whose 16th wedding anniversary is Dec. 31. “If this marriage lasts beyond the holidays, it will be a miracle.”
But the source says Will is desperate to avoid a divorce. “Will has more to lose since he was the major breadwinner and they’d likely have to split things in half,” explained the source. Will has also previously stated that “divorce just can’t be an option.” Meanwhile Jada just doesn’t feel that she has as much reason to stay married. “She’s telling friends that she’s thinking of filing for divorce and having a Happy New Year – without Will!”

REVIEW: Watching ‘Saro The Musical’ could leave a sour taste in your mouth

Saro The musical
Watching Saro you could leave with a sour taste in your mouth – not as a result of disappointment, but from a feeling that Nigeria can and should have much more of this kind of production. The two-hour-long musical is the first of its kind in Nigeria – the same country that boasts some of the biggest names in African entertainment.
The word Saro refers to freed slaves from Sierra Leone who settled in Nigeria in the early 1800s. In the same vein, the musical, which is set in modern times, celebrates migrants to Lagos from other parts of Nigeria, with a focus on four talented young men (played by Patrick Diabuah, Olumide Dada, Athony Offiong Edet and Paolo Sisiano). The quartet face a series of challenges as they chase better fortunes in this ‘city of dreams’.
A little more could have been done with the stage setup, although this would be best achieved in a proper theatre, rather than a hotel ball room. Energy was not in short supply as the actors, singers and dancers in their eye-catching costumes showed their spontaneity, proving that this show is worth taking on the road, anywhere in the world. The music was solidly executed, both by the main characters of the act (including Diabuah’s operatic voice), but also by the band, which featured a cohesive horn section. The audience was both motionlessly fixated on the stage or singing along. Under the leadership of the musical director Ayo Ajayi, the 25-piece ensemble played a medley of Nigerian music right from classics from Fela Kuti to todays hits from Olamide, Davido and Omawumi, among others, showing just how much talent this country has to offer. Talent though, we can all agree, has never been Nigeria’s problem. Saro’s executive producer, Bolanle Austen-Peters, has shown just how the country can harness the energy and creativity of its population. Austen-Peters has prior experience in the arts, running productions at TerraKulture – her cultural centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Saro opened on Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, and ran right through the weekend with tickets ranging from 5000 to 40000 Naira, which reveals the demographic the producers were aiming for – although to be fair, that’s not far from what you would get to watch a Broadway or West End musical, in the UK or US respectively.
The opening show was marred with technical issues affecting the microphones and the 3D laser backdrop, but these hitches were corrected in the later performances.
Considering the novelty and size of this project, it is a shame to have had it open for only one weekend.
Lagos, and Nigeria as a whole, could do with productions like Saro all year round but there is so much that needs to be in place before this can happen. There need to be spaces where performance artists can practice and also perform, and the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, would be perfect for that, if only it was not such a grim representation of Nigeria’s maintenance culture.
Nigerian theatre, and performance arts as a whole, still has a long way to go but as Bolanle Austen-Peters has shown, it is up to the citizens to innovate, and Saro has definitely lived up to its billing.
It would be great to see this show return. It was a little rough around the edges but nothing that some smooth finishing cannot handle. Break a leg!

REVIEW: Victoria Kimani’s kingdom is almost here

Queen Victoria Mixtape
 Album- Queen Victoria
Artiste- Victoria Kimani
Guest Appearances- Lynxxx, Banky W, Loose Kaynon, Pryse, Ada, Wyre, Akuse, Prezzo, AY, Ron Browz, Kyah Baby, Rukus, Shiiikane, Kimya Bamboo,
Producers- Kid Konnect, Chopstix, Drebeats, Ron Browz, Wayne, Drocc, White Nerd
Record Label- Chocolate City (2013)
In a bid to expand to conquer the African continent, Chocolate City opened shop in Kenya and signed its first non-Nigerian act Victoria Kimani. After a couple of singles, the East African pop artiste drops her new mixtape Queen Victoria which can be regarded as her first showing in the Nigerian market.
19 tracks long, Queen Victoria is a mixtape which features Victoria Kimani on both original beats and borrowed instrumentals. The collection starts with ‘Open Your Heart.’ Singing on DJ Sbu’s ‘Lengoma’ Victoria Kimani turns the instrumental into an emotional pop ballad. It’s a nice approach of flipping one of the hottest instrumentals from South African House within the last two years. The track also has a whiff of emo to it.
On ‘Forgive Them Father’ featuring Ada, Victoria Kimani borrows Foxy Brown’s 2001 single ‘Oh Yeah’ featuring Spragga Benz. The Indian singing is a nice feature on the whole set up of the track. ‘Do What You Do’ is a breezy summer pop song featuring Banky W who delivers a few rap bars that should jumpstart the discussion of his rumoured all rap mixtape once again.
Victoria Kimani goes the dancehall route on ‘Freaks’ which jacks French Montana’s song of the same name. ‘African Man’ featuring Lynxxx is a lusty crunchy pop song produced by Kid Konnect. It features a haunting oriental flute and a surprising element of Victoria Kimani singing Seyi Sodimu’s 1998 hit track ‘Love Me Jeje’ at the end.  The Choc City queen brushes off a lover who is asking her for money on the short but interesting ‘My Money’.
Kid Konnect produces a groovy haters’ anthem on ‘F.U.M.F’ featuring Loose Kaynon. The bearded Loopy Records MC spits ‘listen so hating is so last year/why you so mad cos my sweat shirt is cashmere’ on the track. The crown prince of auto-tune Ron Browz rears his head on ‘Touch Me’. The track has a theme of lust and has a knocking effect much to the delight of the listener. Victoria Kimani gets playful on ‘We like to Party’ which has the bassline as Lumidee’s 2007 ‘Never Leave You’.
Victoria Kimani tries her hands on Sean Tizzle’s ‘Sho Lee’ on ‘Get Wild’ featuring Shiiikane but the beat is too much for her. It would have been best of she left it alone. Tracks like ‘Own Zone’ and ‘Girlz’ are disposable tracks with too much sheen and not enough warmth. This is the major fault line of the project. There is too much gloss and not enough heart. Also Victoria Kimani’s over reliance on auto-tune can make the mixtape tiring.
However on ‘Heaven’ she changes the tone of the project. On the song she sings ‘I need your angel wings every single night…it’s something I can’t explain, your presence cures my pain.’  The latter end of the project follows suit as the artiste touches on more serious topics on tracks like ‘Africa I Love You’ and ‘Trayvon’.

Overall, Queen Victoria is a promising start from the pop artiste. She has the look and the vibe. All she needs is emotional depth.

[Album Review]: Reminisce is high chief of indigenous rap with ‘Alaga Ibile’

Reminisce-ALAGA-IBILE-Artwork1

Album- Alaga Ibile
Artiste- Reminisce
Guest Artistes- Sossick, Endia, Olamide, Obadice, Naeto C, Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy
Producers- Sossick, Shizzi, Chopstix, Sarz, Dee Vee, Jospo
Record Label- Edge Records (2013)
Duration- 55 minutes
Indigenous rap is the in thing now with Olamide and Phyno being the poster boys of the new rap movement. While they may hug the headlines an equally talented indigenous rapper by the name of Reminisce serves as the lord of the underground. Having struggled to gain recognition early on his career, Reminisce embraced his indigenous side and released the hit single ‘Kako Bi Chicken’.
It’s been two years and some months since the release of the single that finally put Reminisce on the spotlight. Within that period he dropped his debut album Book of Rap Stories which largely went unnoticed. This time around with a better understanding of his abilities as a bilingual rapper Reminisce drops his second album Alaga Ibile.
On this project majority of the production is handled by Sossick who is best known for his work on Da Grin’s classic sophomore rap album C.E.O which is also regarded as the greatest Yoruba rap album ever. With additional production from wonder boy Sarz, Alaga Ibile is Reminisce’s most impressive work so far.
Remilekun Safaru starts his album with ‘Intro’ which features menacing piano keys similar to that of a Dr. Dre production. Reminisce shows his unique bilingual qualities when he spits ‘wanna know the truth/mi o ki n se butter/ spent most of my youth chilling in the gutter/smoke a lot of kush that’s why I stutter/but mi o le nowo lori jewels got to take care of my daughter’ . The thumping street influenced production continues on ‘Government’ featuring Endia and Olamide. On the Chopstix instrumental Reminisce and Olamide go hard with their Odua bars before Endia cleans it up with his rap/dancehall mash up verse.
The chemistry between Reminisce and Sossick is spot on. The tracks ‘3rd World Thug Freestyle’ and ‘Pimp by Blood’ are decent tracks featuring Reminisce dropping his flashy bars over Sossick’s banging production. Going a step further, Sossick helps Reminisce bring out his introspective side on ‘Turn It Around’. The rapper forsakes his showy style to chronicle his rise to the top while Sossick delivers the gloomy chorus he is known for. This is the centre piece of the album and it is encouraging to see Reminisce showing a new side to himself even though it is only on a track.
The Reminisce and Sossick combination fails on two songs. The fault is more of production than rapping with Sossick choosing to ape American rap beats for Rem’ to rap on. ‘Swagu’ featuring Oba Dice and ‘Buga’ featuring Naeto C sound disconnected and disjointed.
You don’t have to go far on the album before you know that Reminisce has other ambitions apart from dropping rhymes for the streets. The next track ‘Sunkere’ reveals Reminisce’s talent of mixing rap with Fuji. The Sarz produced ‘Fantasi’ is the perfect example of this merger with Reminisce becoming a full time Fuji artiste. Hip Hop purists might balk at the transformation but at the end of the day the song is a crowd mover which is all that matters. The pop star Wizkid donates a hook on ‘Eleniyan’ which sees Reminisce dishing his patent rhyme style of mentioning fashion brands and street lingo.
Not all the mainstream experiments work on this album. ‘Ife’ is just too much singing for Reminisce. In his attempt to deliver a love song the rapper goes too far. His collaboration with Davido on ‘Daddy’ is album filler at best. Luckily the humorous ‘Agidigbo’ which name checks several joints where runs girls hustle comes off well and ‘Rude Girl’ featuring Burna Boy is an impressive dancehall track.
Most indigenous rappers get very uncomfortable when rapping in English. Reminisce is an exception. He switches from English to Yoruba and vice-versa well. With such an exceptional gift it is strange to hear him only rap about a limited range of topics. With such a deep voice and bilingual flow one would have expected Reminisce to touch on several topics that will push his brand further.
However despite his limited range, Reminisce has dropped a solid album that should see him in the top spot with his contemporaries.

Sossick who is no stranger to producing solid albums has helped Reminisce orchestrate a solid piece of work that is part Hip Hop and part pop. Reminisce should no longer be regarded as the chief of indigenous rap (alaga ibile) but the high chief.

ALBUM REVIEW: There’s nothing ‘Graceful and Glorious’ about Solidstar’s album

Solid star
Artiste- Solidstar
Album- Grace $ Glory
Guest Appearances- Flavour, Xcellente, Vector, Jesse Jagz, Ikpa Udo, Timaya, Iyanya, Jojo, Eva, Olamide
Producers- Solid Star, Popito, Master Kraft, Jay Sleek, Mecca E, Rundatrax, Endee, Slim Beat, Tyrine, Prodo, Bonesnack, Kukbeat
Label- Achievas Entertainment (2013)
Solid Star’s second album is titled Grace and Glory and it contains 21 tracks from the singer who broke through with ‘One In A Million’ featuring 2face Idibia. To his credit, he has dropped equally successful follow up singles then. ‘Omotena’ and the club banger ‘Skibo’ have helped raise his profile in the crowded pop terrain.
But when you listen to Grace and Glory the already mentioned singles are arguably the best songs on the album. Solid Star falls into the same trap many of his contemporaries have fallen into: He stacks his album with random songs that gives the album a loose and sometimes directionless feel. There is no story behind the album.
The project starts with ‘Halle’ which gives you hope that the album might be about something more concrete. Solid Star retraces his steps and thanks God for what he has achieved in his career so far. ‘Worry Me’ is another standard Nigerian pop song about a woman whose physical attributes are overwhelming. ‘Anointing’ is a boring song even with its banging beat. There are too many repetitive lines in the song which is a hallmark of many Nigerian pop songs.
Chop Money’ featuring Xcellente is an attempt to construct a song that will appeal to the Francophone countries but the construction is not properly done as Solid Star abandons words for gibberish talk. ‘Zizi’ is a skippable cut on the album.
Luckily ‘Omode’ comes in to breathe life on the album. Singing in Yoruba Solid Star shows that he has something to offer when he takes his song writing seriously. ‘Rich and Famous’ is an interesting track. Featuring Ikpa Udo the Calabar rapper delivers his verse in his native tongue Ibibio. ‘No be say because dem say na me sing pass. No be say because dem say Solid handsome pass. Study hard and read your books you will pass your class because this life is just a lesson’ sings Solid Star on the song. This is one of his brightest moments on the album. He just fails to seize the moment and falls back to his shortcomings.
‘Position’ featuring Timaya is basically what you should expect from a standard pop song- repetitive lines, cheesy rhyme structures placed on a beat that seems to do all the work. ‘Shashiwowo’ featuring Iyanya offers something slightly better but it is nothing grand.
By the time you get to the last third of the album you are exhausted. Probably sensing the boredom, Solid Star delivers the reggae influenced ‘I’m Sorry’ featuring Eva. This is a welcome deviation and Eva’s verse adds some needed depth. ‘Shepe’ featuring Olamide boosts the album a little. It seems this singer has a good thing going when he collaborates with rappers.
‘One Nigeria’, ‘Money Movement’, ‘Balling’ and ‘Everyday’ ensure that the album ends in a less than graceful note.

Solid Star’s album is a reflection of the state of Nigerian pop. The whole genre seems to be in a slump and sadly Solid Star’s debut contributes to it. There are bright flashes on the album but they are not enough to see that Solid Star’s first album is graceful and glorious.

#JustineSacco: US PR exec faces sack over derogatory comment on Africa

Justine Sacco
Justine Sacco’s offensive tweet has been deleted. Photo: Twitter
An employee for the US internet company InterActiveCorp must have thought her Twitter comment on Africa was quite funny, well the expensive joke might just cost her, her job.
Justine Sacco, a communications director for IAC right before boarding a flight to a country in Africa tweeted ‘Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!‘. Sacco then boarded the plane and couldn’t access the internet for hours, little did she know the hailstorm she had raised on the internet and embarrassment she had caused the company.
Not only has the tweet been deleted, Sacco’s Twitter account has also been wiped off the face of the web. IAC has also released a statement over the matter, profusely apologising for the offensive remark.
This is an outrageous, offensive comment that does not reflect the views and values of IAC. Unfortunately, the employee in question is unreachable on an international flight, but this is a very serious matter and we are taking appropriate action.” IAC said in a statement.

There have also been reports that Sacco has been fired from the company. NET has reached out to IAC but we’re yet to get a response as at the time of this report.

Good news ladies! Banky W says he’s single

Banky W
Ladies, when you see Banky W passing by, do make sure you ‘holla at ur boy‘, as the RnB singer has declared for the umpteenth time he is officially single.
In a recent interview with HipTV , the singer talks about his relationship status and rumoured romance with Italian-Ghanaian model Andrea Giaccaglia
Clearing the air on Giaccaglia, he says ‘That’s news to me. Nothing happened, she’s a fantastic person who happens to be my friend. I think people shouldn’t be so obsessed about my relationship status, I’ll get married when the time is right and the lady is right‘.

And then the EME boss reaffirms his single status: When these two things are in order I’ll marry. At the moment, I am 100 per cent single‘, he added.

Fans feel Chimamanda Adichie’s ‘Americanah’ isn’t a ‘great book’

Chimamanda Adichie - 'Americanah'
This week, BBC ranked Chimamanda Adichie’s third novel, ‘Americanah‘ as one of the top 10 books of 2013. The New York Times also named the book as one of the 10 best books of 2013 but a handful of her fans feel the novel isn’t much of a ‘great book’.
Reacting to the New York Times feature, the general comments on several Nigerian websites (and mostly BellaNaija) suggest that readers and followers of the Enugu State born writer are NOT big fans of the book.
The number of negative comments (towards the book and not the writer) is alarming. Read below…
’twasnt a great book…a let down tbh compared to her other work #myhonestopinion’, a comment read. A response to that comment from another reader was ‘same here i gave it a weak 6.5‘.
I have been saying this. compared to purple hibiscus and half of a yellow sun, americanah is a huge let down‘, sefi-ann wrote.
Dan wrote ‘not her best. but still the best to make it on their top 10. i actually think it was better than her 1st book‘.
And the comments went on and on…
Totally agree with U guys. Bought the book and even got it autographed. Gave it out yet I still have my tattered copy of half of a yellow sun. Go figure‘, Shocked one wrote.
The book was WEAK! I tire for over hyping oooo. My biggest regret in books I bought this year was Americanah. As in I regret‘,
I thank God I listened to my friends and borrowed this book instead of buying it. Sincerely not her best book by any margin…Of course Oyibos will like it because it shows them some Africans or African Americans are capable of having intellectual conversations (whether coherent or not)… U will only understand my comment if u have read the book‘.
I didn’t love it. It felt preachy to me. Congratulations to her though‘.
I liked Americanah a lot, but it isn’t my favorite Adichie book. Purple Hibiscus still holds that spot‘.

The thing with Americanah is, it reads like the diary of a woman who eventuakky decided to spill all she had bottled up. Every Nigerian immigrant, especially international student in US America can relate to every page of that book…it is almost like she wrote a collage of every immigrant Nigerian’s – infact – African’s diary. So, while I think it is a brilliantly written book, it is too familiar for me to be in awe of it‘.

Wale’s ‘The Gifted’ also missing from Rolling Stone ’20 Best HipHop Albums of 2013′

Wale's 'The Gifted' was released on June 25, 2013 in the United States by Maybach Music Group and Atlantic Records.
Wale’s ‘The Gifted’ was released on June 25, 2013 in the United States by Maybach Music Group and Atlantic Records.
Let’s see if Mr Folarin is going to make another phone call and threaten someone else’s staff…
Wale‘s ‘The Gifted‘ album seems to have failed in making an impression in the media; Rolling Stone magazine has excluded it from its 20 Best HipHop Albums of 2013′ list.
The list which was published this week highlights Kanye West‘s ‘extreme’ album as the best album of 2013, calling it an ‘electro masterpiece’. Drake‘s ‘Nothing Was The Same‘ and Danny Brown‘s ‘Old‘ fall in second and third place.
Many have however questioned why French Montana ‘Excuse my French’ and MMG’s ‘Selfmade 3′ made the list and Wale’s third studio album didn’t.
Wale recently fired at Complex.com’s staff for excluding his album from their ’50 Best Albums of 2013‘, threatening to beat their staff up. He later tendered an apology.
